Lord's
Comforting English food!
On an unseasonably warm spring day, I went down to NoHo for some comforting English fare at Lord’s. The space was less warm than I was expecting honestly, but it was still comforting. There was just less wood than I figured there would be, but it was definitely bustling and full of candle-lit tables with lots of chatter and warm staff.
We started with the famous Curried Lamb Scotch Egg. This was definitely worth the hype. For the small amount of lamb wrapped around the egg, it was packed with flavor. The lamb was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and the egg was nicely seasoned (as you can see from the flecks of salt and pepper) and perfectly jammy. It was served on top of a yogurt sauce which was a great way to cut through the rich egg and lamb. A tasty starter!
For drinks, my friend ordered the Snap Pea Martini and I got the Madeira Daiquiri. Both drinks were super tasty. I was really trying to savor mine and not drink it all before the entrée came, and my friend’s was actually not as strong as I was expecting for a martini (good thing) and did, in fact, taste like a snap pea. Super refreshing. Mine was citrusy and tart, but slightly sweet, which I loved.
Another starter we ordered was the Sausage Roll & Apple Ketchup. The ketchup did actually taste like apple—I would like to know how they made this. Super creative. The sausage roll is something I’ve wanted to try for quite a while considering it’s a favorite snack of the people I follow online who are English (and who doesn’t like puff pastry and sausage?). The pastry was super flaky, but soft on the inside, and the sausage was juicy and tender. It all went really well with the apple ketchup, which added acidity from the apple and a smooth texture.
We also ordered the Snap Pea Salad with Green Olive, Sheep’s Cheese & Mint. I loved this salad so much; it was super refreshing and laced with some really great acidity. The dressing was light and fresh, and I thought the watercress and snap peas were great bases with contrasting textures for the salad. I loved the green olives and capers which added salty and briney notes to the entire thing, and the sheep’s cheese was creamy and a little salty too. Amazing salad! Only complaints are it was really small and I didn’t taste much mint. I think more mint would’ve made it even better.
For the entrée, we originally wanted to get the famous burger (which is not on the menu by the way). However, when we asked our waitress, she said it was sold out and that it normally sells out within the first set of reservations. Noted. Nevertheless, we got the Steak & Chips with Green Peppercorns and it was delicious. The steak was cooked well and the peppercorn sauce was rich in flavor and we were soaking it all up.
The chips were thick and freshly fried. They lacked some salt, but pairing them with the horseradish dipping sauce they gave us remedied that problem. They were super fluffy on the inside, which I loved. One thing I will say is the sizes of the fries were inconsistent which left some a little hard and then others perfectly soft. But I’d definitely get these again.
For dessert, we ordered the Warm Sticky Ginger Sponge & Vanilla Ice Cream, which, of course, is basically a sticky toffee pudding (an English classic) with a ginger pudding. This was so so so good. The ginger was strong, which I really appreciated, because it really cut through what can be a super sweet dessert. The cake was still warm and we were just obsessed with this.
Dinner at Lord’s was so delicious (even without the burger!) and I would 100% go back. I also want to try their sister restaurant Dame, but Lord’s is for sure a keeper. It’s a cute place to catch up with a friend like I did, but also the candle light is, in my mind, always a good option for a date night too. Get down to Lord’s!
